As a pre-Christmas treat, a preview has now been released, though it's hampered by YouTube's poor compression—perhaps explaining the director's choice to restrict the trailer solely for theatrical audiences.
The Initial Look of the Stellar Ensemble
The debut footage showcases Matt Damon in the role of Odysseus. Audiences are introduced to Tom Holland playing the son and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. In a poignant moment, Penelope asks her husband to vow he will return, only for him to look up and question what occurs should he fail. Furthermore, the preview provides a quick, obscured look of the mythical one-eyed giant, whose flock are taken by the hero and his men during their arduous journey.
Based upon a foundational pillar of Western literature, The Odyssey chronicles the epic journey of the legendary King of Ithaca. Following his victory at Troy, as told within the companion epic, Odysseus endures an extended and hazardous return to his homeland.
Mythical Encounters with an All-Star Cast
Along his path, Odysseus confronts countless challenges and mythical beings. This roster features the enchantress Circe, who transforms men into swine, and the deceptive Sirens. Despite these trials, Odysseus vows to overcome anything to get back to his wife and son in Ithaca.
This film's ensemble boasts an impressive lineup. Alongside the leading trio is Charlize Theron portraying the shrewd goddess, together with Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Tale of Many Adaptations
The classic poem has inspired numerous adaptations over the years. These range from contemporary versions and a late-90s dance production. There has even been a stage musical adaptation titled Epic: The Musical, presented as a nine-album collection.
A full-length preview was long awaited since the film's announcement and a brief teaser that previously played only on the big screen. That teaser subsequently found its way online soon after.
