Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
