Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
